This if hte first sketch for my dads photo. I have shot new referance for this project as well. There will be either no skull at all or have it behind the hands/pipe. There is also the possibillty for a hawk, wolf and moose coming from the smoke but i'll sort that out eventually as for the compositional aspects.
I think perhaps removing the skull is a good idea, but I would consider keeping something there - maybe a few small objects relating to the pipe, like the ingredients in the pipe, a book of matches, etc. And I think the animals in the smoke is a great idea, but keeping them sublte and around the edges of the smoke (where the hint of a bird is now) seems to make the most sense. Great start!
